Lead Free Legislation (to be implemented by 1 July 2006)

Failure to comply with the requirements of ROHS regulations will result in the manufacturer's products being removed from the market place and up to 3 months imprisonment and/or a fine of £5,000. Maximum imprisonment for an offence tried on indictment is up to 2 years imprisonment and an unlimited fine.

How does it affect our industry?

This impacts on wave solder equipment and reflow ovens for both through hole and surface mount production.

Lead free solder has significantly higher melt points compared to standard lead-tin mix, dependant on its constituent components. At Turner Electronics we offer the Novastar range of forced air convection reflow ovens with their patented Cyclonics system to ensure precisely controlled zone temperatures.

Also in our range is the Spartan Wave Solder machine with ceramic coated solder pots, impellers, channels etc to ensure the high tin content doesn't damage the stainless steel component parts.

For more information please contact Graham Ellis at Turner Electronics on 020-8668-0821.

The Directive can be viewed on the Environment Agency website: www.environment.gov.uk/netregs/legislation under Forthcoming Legislation.
